Ran into this recently and I thought it was interesting.
In science class we have been experimenting with sugar. We learned about different kinds of sugar and what they are called. We split up into groups and decided to make different types of candy. One group made gummies, one made fudge, my group made Soda Syrup, and the last group is going to make taffy. We haven’t tasted the gummies yet but the fudge didn’t turn out too well. The seventh graders made carmel and gummies, and their gummies didn’t turn out too well either. The carmel was pretty good though.
David and my soda syrup was good, but also pretty simple. We made a simple syrup, then mixed in Kool-Aid and put it in seltzer water. Everybody that tried it liked it. But when we were making it I got too excited and immediately took all of the simple syrup and put Kool-Aid in it. I forgot that we had gotten other flavors that I wanted to try.
Mock Trial Reflection
Last week the 7th and 8th grade had mock trials. We also did mock trials last year but they were very scripted. This year we were paired up with a partner on either the prosecution or the defense, each person had to write either the opening or closing statement and examine two witnesses. I was paired with Sherif, and I wrote the opening statement. It was fun because we got to write the whole thing ourselves.
Last year we re-enacted the Scopes-Monkey Trial. And this year John wrote a crime for us and put in different evidence and facts. The story was this: Monica Hewitt was being accused of cutting the cords on Jennifer White’s parachute before they went skydiving. Monica was jealous of Jennifer because Jennifer was dating Monica’s ex-boyfriend who she still loved. But it was a tough case for the Prosecution. There were lots holes that could have easily broken our case. Almost all of the evidence was unsure, fingerprints were smudged, witnesses were not wearing their glasses, and a few other things like that.
The week of the trials we had two seminar sessions with either John Fraher, if you were prosecution, or Kasra Sadr for defense. I was on the prosecution. During the seminars we learned about giving opening and closing statements and how to question a witness. The other half of the class was in the next room with Kasra Sadr learning how to be defense attorneys.
At first it was hard I had no idea what to do. On the day of the second seminar we were supposed to bring in our opening statement and our questions. I was nervous, I didn’t know what to expect. I was standing there first in line and I handed John my opening statement. He looked at it for one-second and said, “This is too short” and sent me back to my seat. I felt extremely underprepared. He looked at two more opening
statements and told everybody to sit down. Then I started to feel a little bit better because nobody was sufficiently prepared.
After the second seminar I was nervous that I would not be able to write a good opening. But then on Thursday night I just started writing and came up with a pretty good opening. But during the trial I was worried that my partner, Sherif, had not tried very hard on his portion of the case. But he ended up doing a pretty good job. I was glad that Sherif came through because I know that some people didn’t prepare very much at all and, had very weak arguments.
I felt like Sherif and I did a great job, but I was still nervous that we were not going to win because our jury had just listened to the same case just before and they all voted not guilty. But to my surprise when the judge read the verdict form and said, “Guilty”.
I liked doing the mock trial again. It was definitely better this time than last because we all got to write our own case and everybody’s was a little bit different. I have also always been interested in law and criminal trials, so this was defiantly a good experience for me.
The eighth grade is doing debates about once a week now in class. We started doing debates/discussions because we are done with projects for the year because the rest of our weeks are going to be filled with interruptions like mock trial and drug education.
Our first debate was about capital punishment. I was opposed because I am disturbed that someone can be sentenced to death. The first debate
went well first we argued one on one with a random partner, then we got together as groups and talked some more.
Sometimes we didn’t have even teams so someone would have to argue for a side that they did not believe in. It did not create too many problems but there were a few times that Anthony forgot which side he was arguing for after he switched sides.
Another problem that came up was some people were not engaged in the topic at all and did not bother to learn about it. Sometimes it made it hard to debate with people that were not prepared.
So far I think that the debates are going well and I am looking forward to our next one.
Great Artist Reflection
This was my last Great Artists. I enjoyed it. Great Artists went very well this year. I was happy that we got to choose our own artist, just for ourselves because usually everybody wants to do different artists and then it would take us weeks just to decide who our artist was going to be. Also because I did the kind of art that I wanted and didn’t have to compromise. As far as working hard I did pretty well. I was pleased with how my paintings came out and I made a lot of them.
I like that we all chose our own artist. This way everybody got what they wanted and could produce art that appealed to them. There was no theme to the artist and they ranged from Joyce Watkins and Joseph Boyes. I liked seeing everybody’s art at the end and I liked it. Anthony’s art was especially interesting.
This year for my artist I chose Piet Mondrian because I like abstract art. I like precise but free form shapes. For Piet I made only squares and rectangles in mostly primary colors. There was a little bit of debate about what makes an artist a great artist. I never really had issues with this because Piet is pretty famous.
The week of Great Artist we had a day that was all Great Artists. I liked this day because for my art I needed to let things dry then paint another layer. We also prepped the room with black and white sheets and hung the banner. I hung the banner and I liked that.
I enjoyed my last Great Artist. I think that it is really cool that even in eighth grade we still get to take time to do some art work, then have a show.
Mi grupo hicimos un video sobre los grupos feministas. Este proyecto es difícil por que mi grupo no quedo trabajar con ellos. Pero es no malo el video de nosotros es bueno y cómico.

In humanities we finished our last project. This one was shorter, only two weeks and this time nobody wanted to work in a group. Most people had trouble with the shorter deadline and had to push the due date back a little bit.
My last Humanities project was about Inflation and Deflation. I studied for a couple days then made a power point presentation and created a simulation of a small economy. There were four stores, two gas and two food, then everyone else was a government worker. Then there was one president. Each day we went through Eight stages, first, the stores were allowed to stock up, then everybody bought food and gas, then, the President payed the government workers and collected taxes, and last the president was allowed to print money. Usually the President did not print as much money as the stores spent to import goods so we were in a general deflation.
From the beginning, the President was making all kinds of new laws, one of which was your chair may not be as high as his. Then, the gas station owners began to corrupt him by giving him free gas if he kept the government workers salary low. The food stores were becoming very rich because they bought lots of food then a natural disaster struck and food became valuable. We didn’t get very far into the game when class finished but I think that most people understood Inflation after this project. Also they got a better idea of what an economy looks like. I heard from a few people that said the game was boring at times but I think that most people enjoyed it. In fact some people, (cough, John! cough!) enjoyed it a little too much. It was to the point were we could not play the game. It did make it much more interesting though.
In science we studied the elements and created comics with and element as the main character. This is my comic. My element was platinum
Piet Mondrian was a Dutch Painter. He was born on March seventh of 1872 and died February 1, 1944 at age 71 of pneumonia. He was an impressionist then became an abstract artist. He created a non-representational art style called Neo-Plasticism. The paintings were grids on white backgrounds with primary colored squares. From 1892 to 1897, he took painting classes at the Amsterdam Rijksacademie, a famous art school in the capital of the country. After art school he painted in Amsterdam. He painted rivers and trees which were very popular in that time. He also lived in England in 1900 and Spain from 1901 to 1903. He moved back to the Netherlands till 1940 when he came to the United States where he eventually died. Some Piet Mondrian links
